Filing an insurance claim for your roof can feel overwhelming, especially if you have just had extensive damage done to your home.
If you have extensive damage…
The very first thing to do is to evaluate whether or not it is safe for you and your family to stay in your home. If the damage is too extensive, see if there is a family member or friend who will allow you to stay with them until you get some things straightened out.
Your insurance claim may include compensation for a hotel stay while the roof is being repaired.
This will need to be discussed with your homeowner’s insurance agent as all policies offer different options.
Follow These Steps… Because You Never Know What Might Happen…
Next we would recommend documenting each conversation you have with your insurance representative, immediately after the damage has occurred.
Be sure to write down who you spoke with, the date and the time. Include a brief description of the conversation that took place so you have a good, solid reference to turn to as the process goes on.
When and where it is safe, take as many pictures of the damage that has been done to your roof. Be sure to take pictures of the inside of the house where you see signs of damage as well. This will be a helpful part of your documentation.
Call your insurance company that holds your homeowner’s policy. You may have an agent or they may refer you to the claims department.
Describe what happened to cause damage to your roof. Give the date and time the damage occurred.
Tell the person where you are able to see the damage. For example, if you noticed wet, streaking spots coming in from the upstairs bathroom explain that to the agent or claims department.
After the insurance company has a description of the damage, they will most likely schedule an insurance adjuster to come take a look at your roof. Be sure to set the appointment when you are available and can be at home during the inspection.
It may be a good idea to call a roofer as soon as the damage occurs, so they can help cover up the damage so it doesn’t get worse.
